Liesl Pfeffer
Australian-turned-Brooklynite Liesl Pfeffer chats with us about the immigrant experience in her Dwellings series, influences on her practice, and the best parts of her neighborhood.
I don't plan what photograph will be used in which part of a collage, or go out shooting photographs to be used in specific pieces, I just sort through my piles of photographs until I find the image that feels right.
About the Artist
Originally from Brisbane, Australia, Liesl Pfeffer (b.1979) is an artist living and working in Berlin, Germany. Whether working in photography or textiles, Liesl is interested in the act of dissecting and reconstructing in order to achieve new meaning. In her photographs, Liesl constructs images of the natural and built environment using analog darkroom techniques, still-life photography and collage. Liesl’s textile works are composed of machine pieced and hand-quilted cotton sewn into both large and small tapestries. Inspired by marine signal flags used to communicate at great distances while at sea, Liesl’s textile works are an investigation in language and personal symbology.
