Inspired by his Uprise Art x MacArthur Place residency, Blake Aaseby's pastel drawings feature thousands of marks that evoke the dappled Sonoma light and the rhythmic movement of the nearby ocean tides. Go behind the scenes below.

My time at MacArthur Place was spent documenting the ebb and flow of activity across the grounds and the surrounding neighborhood. Expanding on my exploration of tidal rhythms and gradients, these pieces focus on capturing the subtle transitions of light, movement, and atmosphere that define the property’s unique sense of place. The mottled textures of the compositions are drawn from the undulating shadows cast at the property’s entrance, while the palettes reflect the bodies of water in and around MacArthur Place.
