We take a tour of Scott Sueme's Vancouver studio to take a closer look at how his graphic, abstract paintings come together.
I often think in fragments when it comes to making a painting. It's a way to not get too wrapped up in the end result. When things are broken down into parts, connections and throughlines bubble up to the surface with little intervention. I feel a sense of clarity and focus when thinking about a specific interaction, or the little moments that make a complete picture.

I would get more nuances in colors when they were mixed on separate days while working on one piece. I started to think of this as an advantage rather than a crutch, knowing that mixing the same color on separate occasions is quite difficult to get them to match identically.

Part of an ongoing series of assemblage works, these pieces consist of cut and painted wood pieces that are arranged and glued together into their compositions. The colors shift from greens to oranges in this piece, and takes its inspiration from the transition between our seasons.
