Organic modernism in a Chicago duplex
With sweeping views of the Chicago skyline, this duplex is both an entertainer's oasis and a peaceful retreat. Our friends at Liz Lipkin Interiors thoughtfully pair modern furniture with hand-selected works by artists Katrine Hildebrandt-Hussey, Fitzhugh Karol, and more that embrace the surrounding environment through their organic material and sustainable practices.
I used a mix of textures and finishes to add dimension to the neutral palette, and to create cozy and inviting rooms. There are a lot of natural fibers and materials like linen, cotton, wool, wood and stone. They bring warmth into each room, and vintage pieces add patina and character.

Placing the bed in the window gave the room a strong focal point as well as a calming symmetry. I included all of the thoughtful details that you’d expect from a hotel room; crisp white sheets, bedside tables with dimmable lighting, and a full size dresser and desk.

The client had two priorities for the apartment; he wanted a peaceful place where he could come home from work or travel and decompress; and he wanted his guests to feel equally at home, whether they’re visiting for a dinner party or a weekend stay.
